"Fisrt Lieutenant Wharton was leading his infantry company across a 100-yard stretch of open terrain in an attack upon the town of Fronhoven, Germany, on 22 November 1944, when severe enemy fire pinned the unit to the ground half-way to its objective. First Liuetenant Wharton jumped to his feet and, in the face of heavy machine gun and direct tank fire, rallied his men for a final assault.
An enemy shell exploding 20 yards away knocked him to the ground and severely wounded him. First Lieutenant Wharton refused to be evacuated and retained command of his unit.
He continued to advance with his unit until the objective was taken and the defenses of the new position were established."
