Herman R. Crowder, Jr., First Lieutenant, 760th Tank Battalion. For gallantry in action on 19 March 1944, near Cassino, Italy. While engaged in close combat with the enemy, Lieutenant Crowder left his command tank when the radio transmitter ceased functioning and under fire from snipers approximately forty yards distant, went to an open-topped British reconnaissance tank equipped with radio to continue the direction of his company. He later went forward in this Same vehicle under close range machine-gun and small arms fire to rescue the crew of a disabled tank. Throughout the entire action, Lieutenant Crowder skilfully controlled the movements of his company and by his cool manner and daring actions inspired his men to do their utmost.
