1e. For having deployed in the Java Sea on February 27th, 1942, the Allied naval squadron under his command in a capable and daring fashion against a superior enemy power, ultimately forcing it to withdraw setting an excellent example with his flagship, Our cruiser HMS "De Ruyter"
2e For having repeatedly tried in the subsequent night action on February 27th, to 28th, to break through the strong enemy position in order to attack the transport fleet which was threatening Java whereby in said action both Dutch cruisers went down in honourable fashion.
