After eliminating the first enemy units, Lieutenant Colonel Merrit and some other units stormed in the direction of the bridge. During this heroic action they managed to capture the target and formed a bridgehead while they were under heavy enemy fire. By doing so they made it possible to continue the evacuation of allied troops from the beach. Lieutenant Merrit and the other survivors were eventually captured and they spent the remainder of the war as prisoners of war.
